Hydrological and Environmental Study for Al-Kar Land Site, Al-Aziziyah Municipality, Makkah
Hexa Line Projects was engaged by Saudi Binladin Group to conduct an integrated hydrological and environmental study for the Al-Kar land site located within the Al-Aziziyah Municipality in Makkah. The study was required to support land development planning and regulatory approvals in one of the most densely visited urban zones in the world.
| Client | Saudi Binladin Group |
| Region | Makkah Al-Mukarramah |
| Year | 2024 |
| Category | Hydrological & Environmental Study |
Objectives
- Assess the hydrological characteristics of the Al-Kar site, including surface runoff, infiltration, and flood risk.
- Evaluate existing environmental conditions and identify sensitive environmental receptors.
- Determine the site’s suitability for development from hydrological and environmental perspectives.
- Provide design recommendations for drainage infrastructure and environmental protection measures.
Methodology
Hydrological modeling was conducted using rainfall data specific to the Makkah region, combined with topographic surveys and soil permeability testing. Environmental field investigations documented vegetation cover, soil conditions, and potential contamination sources. Drainage network analysis was performed to assess infrastructure requirements.
Deliverables
- Integrated hydrological and environmental study report.
- Flood risk and inundation mapping for the Al-Kar site.
- Drainage infrastructure design recommendations.
- Environmental management guidelines for the development phase.
Significance & Impact
Given the critical importance of Makkah as a global destination for pilgrims and its unique urban pressures, this study played a crucial role in ensuring that the Al-Kar site development by Saudi Binladin Group was pursued responsibly, with robust hydrological and environmental safeguards in place.
